Extremis on Netflix
Extremis is a very short (24 min) documentary on Netflix that recently won the best documentary short at the Tribeca Film Festival this year. It takes place at the Highlands Hospital ICU in Oakland, CA. Extremis takes you into the intimate conversations that doctors and nurses have with patients and their families when someone is dying. The persistence of the healthcare providers is emotionally exhausting, as they continue ongoing efforts to explain that the patient is dying and that we are hurting them more than we are helping. The families are incredibly strong, and you feel empathy towards their predicament.
I enjoyed this documentary because I have these conversations on a daily basis. I think it's an important gesture to the public to continue to discuss end of life options with family members because most people will have an experience like this in an ICU, whether with themselves or with a family member. If you are a nurse, doctor, or caregiver, I strongly suggest watching this documentary.
